【Umeda】Featuring the Whitey Umeda / Izumi no Hiroba area, one of Osaka’s most popular underground shopping areas, which has undergone a major renovation for the first time in half a century!

On December 5, 2019, the Whitey Umeda / Izumi no Hiroba area, an underground mall, reopened for the first time in nearly 50 years. With the concept of “a variety of food that only Osaka can offer,” 35 shops are divided into three zones: the Ohgimachi Zone, the Izumi Plaza Zone and the NOMOKA Zone. This time, we’re featuring the Nomoka zone where you can use bars and izakaya!

A new food underworld divided into three zones!

If you look at the renewal part of this time in MAP, it looks like this. The Nomoka zone at the east end of Whitey Umeda, from Fountain Square to the stairs leading up to East Street, is a place where you can enjoy a drink. There are 17 restaurants from famous izakayas to Japan’s first restaurants, all based on the concept that you can easily stop by for a drink.

A tree-shaped symbol called the “Water Tree” was created in the new fountain plaza. The branches and leaves are made of stainless steel with a mirror finish, which reflects the LED light. The fact that “Naked”, the company responsible for the projection mapping of Nijo Castle, is in charge of the project, also makes it a great topic of conversation.

There are a lot of cheap shops that destroy the price!
Lots of shops we found in “NOMOKA” that we definitely want to stop by!

1) Wasurenagusa

Higobashi’s standing and drinking line has moved to a larger seating area!

Since its opening in Higobashi in 2000, it has been loved by many regulars who line up every day for a standing drink. There was a lot of talk about the fact that it was not a new store, but a relocation after closing the main store. As in the original days, this restaurant serves great food and drinks with excellent value for money. The menu has been further enhanced with the addition of new dishes such as jibie, kushikatsu and yakitori.

Here’s a menu I want you to taste!

Live shrimp odori (1 piece)
180 yen (excluding tax)

It is a popular menu that represents “forget-me-not” grass. Whenever an order comes in, they take it out of the store’s small disks and cook it, so you can’t go wrong with freshness! The texture melts in your mouth as soon as you put it in your mouth, and the rich taste is irresistible. Since the head is deep-fried, you can enjoy it twice as well. Due to the non-cost ratio, the limit is two tails per person.

A piece of live shrimp grilled with salt
180 yen (excluding tax)

This one is also grilled with salt. The meat is crispy and firm, and the shell is also crispy and fragrant, so you should try it head first.

Deer thigh sashimi
580 yen (excluding tax)

A new addition to gibier cuisine. They are sent directly from a hunter in Wakakura-cho, Tottori Prefecture, so the freshness is, of course, reasonably priced. You can enjoy the refreshing taste of red meat with no odor. They also serve venison such as tataki and yukhoe.

Unlike the standing drinking style of the past, the restaurant is fully equipped with counters and tables. Even those who are not good at tachinomi can now enjoy it slowly. Because of its convenient location, it is likely to become even more popular than it was in the Higo Bridge era.

2) Taipei Gyoza Zhangji

Popular dumplings in Taipei have landed in Japan for the first time!

In Taipei, Taiwan, the long-established “Zhangji Nabe Pasted Beef Noodles” is loved by the locals. The restaurant is especially famous for its garlic-free stick fried dumplings and water dumplings. In addition to the authentic dumplings that we learned from our local training, we also offer a variety of other specialties such as Taiwanese small plates, hot and sour soup and mapo tofu. You can enjoy a wide variety of Taiwanese and Chinese cuisine.

Here’s a menu I want you to taste!

Zhang’s Gautier’s Bo-yaki Gyoza (dumplings)
5 pieces, 290 yen (excluding tax)

The famous fried dumplings are made without garlic and are filled with domestic yellow chives. The crispy, savory skin and the delicious taste of the yellow chives are so light in the aftertaste that you can eat many of them. You can enjoy it in two types of sauce, the sweet secret sauce and the special soy sauce.

Zhang’s water dumplings
5 pieces 390 yen (excluding tax)

The standard water dumpling in Taiwan is also garlic-free. These dumplings have a smooth mouthfeel and a chewy texture. The inside is full of coarsely ground meat, and the more you bite into it, the more juicy and delicious it is.

The dumplings are made by staff members who have actually trained at the main restaurant. He has mastered the balance between the crust and the ingredients and has masterfully recreated a simple yet insatiable flavor. You can also enjoy the “Taiwanese Mother’s Flavor Minced Pork Rice” for 790 yen (excluding tax), which was taught to you by the mother at the main restaurant.

The ambiance of the local stall-style space is outstanding, with walls that look like they’ve been left unattended to and neon lights featuring mahjong tiles. They also offer take-out dumplings before they are baked, so you can buy them and take them home to enjoy them freshly baked.

3) Tempura Daikichi

A famous tempura restaurant from Sakai opens its first shop in Umeda

Established in 1982 in a fish market in Sakai, Japan. It used to be known as a phantom tempura because it was open from midnight to the next morning because the customers were mainly middlemen. It is now available in Namba, but this is the first time it has opened in the Umeda area. From 120 yen (excluding tax) for a single item, there are always over 50 different types of items to choose from. The fresh ingredients and crispy and light batter go well with rice and alcohol.

Here’s a menu I want you to taste!

Shokichi-mori (7 pieces)
950 yen (excluding tax)

Assorted tempura of the day. Although the contents vary slightly depending on the selection, the standard shrimp and anago are always included. The balance of the slightly sweetened tempura, grated radish and large tempura is exquisite.

Miso soup with clams
400 yen (excluding tax)

This is also a specialty of the restaurant. This is a simple miso soup with plenty of clams in it, but full of clams’ flavor. It’s also good for the liver, which is damaged by alcohol. Incidentally, it was customary to throw away the shells after eating them under the floor… Unfortunately, there was a sign that said please refrain from using this place. Regulars are likely to make a mistake, but there is a shell case that is served with them when they are served, so please toss it in there.

Assorted sashimi
1,000 yen (excluding tax)

In addition to tempura, the restaurant has started offering fresh sashimi as well. The thickly cut fish, like the tempura, is procured daily at the nearby Kizu market, so there is no complaint about the freshness. There are six kinds of fish, including yellowtail, medium fatty tuna, striped horse mackerel, and flatfish, depending on the day’s selection, but the volume is also very satisfying.

Inside the restaurant, there are counters and tables, as well as high tables for stand-up drinks, making it an appealing place to enjoy a quick and easy meal. Soak up the atmosphere with a design that has seashells embedded in the floor, as the seashells cannot be thrown away. In addition to more than 50 different types of tempura, there are also 10 daily specials such as cod roe, oysters and mozzarella caprese. We also have a lunch set that comes with an assortment of tempura and clams in miso soup for lunch, so even those who don’t drink should definitely take advantage of it.

4) Fishermen’s Sake Bar Araki

Authentic seafood dishes prepared by Kochi fishermen!

The mother company is a fisherman’s tavern in Sukumo, Kochi Prefecture, which is involved in fishing and seafood processing. This is the first time he’s run a restaurant. So, this is the first time we’ve opened a store in Japan. You can enjoy seafood dishes that take full advantage of the company’s strengths, such as fresh seafood caught by fishing and sent directly from Kochi, as well as bonito tataki, which is grilled by artisans.

Here’s a menu I want you to taste!

Bonito Wara-Yaki Tataki Ponzu
490 yen (excluding tax)

Speaking of Kochi, here’s a good place to start. The meat, which is full of deliciousness, is not watery or smelly, and the aroma of the wara-yaki is also soft. It’s a thick slice of food, and it’s a great value for money, so it’s a great place to drink alone.

Five kinds of fishermen’s sashimi
790 yen (excluding tax)

The sashimi is also this large and this content is exceptional. Each slice of the day’s recommended seafood, such as red meat, yellowtail, and octopus, is thick and satisfying. A three-course meal is also available for 590 yen (excluding tax).

Fried real tuna stomach with butter
490 yen (excluding tax)

This is a rare part of the tuna that can be purchased only because the mother company has a relationship with a real tuna farming company. You can’t get enough of the butter flavor and the unique texture that is crunchy but soft.

Inside the restaurant, there are counters surrounding the kitchen, and tables in the back. The menu changes every day as the seafood is sourced, so the variety written on the whiteboard was impressive. The bonito and real tuna menus are available in the 300-400 yen range, so it will come in handy when you want to enjoy a crispy red meat drink.

The more you bite into the carefully grilled venison, the more you can feel the wild and delicious taste of the red meat. It goes well with “Yoichi Zweigeltrebe”, which has fruit and spice aromas.

Shinshu salmon salad set meal

The delicious Shinshu salmon is served with vegetables. It is recommended to pair it with the dry and fragrant Nagano Chardonnay to complement the refreshing fat.

6) Orange Ponzu Manufacturing
(Dai Dai Pons Sei Sakusho)

An unusual type of bar that makes the most of the appeal of ponzu and citrus fruits

A bar that specializes in ponzu, which has never been done before. Homemade orange ponzu with citrus fruits such as Kishu’s orange, special soy sauce and dashi made in collaboration with the long-established “Fukuman Soy Sauce”. There will be a variety of dishes and drinks that make use of the citrus fruits that make up the ponzu. It has a refreshing and innovative aftertaste while making the most of the ingredients!

From the grilled skewers, King Salmon, 230 yen (front right), Petit Tomato Meat Roll, 200 yen (front left), Lettuce Meat Roll, 260 yen (center), Pork Kimchi Cheese Meat Roll, 260 yen (back) (all before tax)

Deep-fried Tosa chicken

Tosa-Shimizu’s famous chicken is deep-fried to perfection. It is not only refreshing but also tender due to the ponzu effect.

Nama!(Raw!) Dai Dai Sour,
360 yen (excluding tax)

This is the famous drink made from about 1/2 orange. Gentle carbonation, fresh orange sourness and sweetness, and a refreshing aftertaste. You can drink it like a juice, so I recommend it to everyone.

What surprises me is the set of homemade ponzu, dashi soy sauce and citrus fruits served at the beginning. You can make various kinds of citrus ponzu by adding dashi soy sauce to a small plate and squeezing citrus fruits. A variety of citrus fruits, including orange, will be available depending on the season. After you’ve enjoyed the homemade ponzu in the base, you can customize it and enjoy your own personal ponzu.

The interior of the restaurant is decorated in warm colors reminiscent of citrus fruits and has a casual atmosphere. In addition to the above, there was a variety of other dishes on the menu, such as kombu jime and nabe with orange. In addition, we collaborated with SABAR, which is known as a mackerel specialty store! You can also enjoy grilled mackerel skewers and salt, which is our pride.

7) Hakata Tenjin Hormone

Hakata-style teppanyaki in a popular bar with a sense of presence!

The latest in a popular teppan-yaki restaurant that prepares hormones and other food right in front of the counter. Until now, our affiliated restaurants have mainly served set menus and teppan-yaki, but this is the first restaurant in Japan that has developed a menu that is more like a popular bar so that you can enjoy it more cost-effectively. We offer a wide variety of izakaya’s classic menu items, including hormones that you can enjoy a little bit of each part of your body, as well as meat tofu and meat soup.

Here’s a menu I want you to taste!

Hormone mixed teppan-yaki
600 yen + Tax

The must-order item is the specialty here. This hormone mix of akasen, small intestine, and large intestine is seasoned with a sweet miso sauce and is the best match for rice and sake. You can feel the sweetness of the fat and the melt-in-your-mouth texture is also excellent.

Famous Japanese beef tofu
450 yen + Tax

Another speciality is the standard meat tofu, which is made by deliberately stewing Japanese beef. The base dashi is surprisingly lightly seasoned to make the best use of the rich flavor of Wagyu beef. The seasoned cotton tofu is also large and hearty.

You can feel the atmosphere of a mass bar, but the interior is clean and stylish. For a small group of people, I would definitely like to sit at the counter where you can bite into the hormones as they are grilled. There are also dashi-maki tamago (rolled eggs) on a teppan (teppan), so you’ll want to order one and enjoy the process up close.
