Universal Studios Japan is set to open a new area called “Super Nintendo World” on March 18, 2012. I’m not in a position to travel just yet, but for those of you who hope to visit Japan again someday, here’s a little taste of what’s in store!
Super Nintendo World
Super Nintendo World,” which recreates the world of Nintendo games and popular characters such as Super Mario, is a huge two-tiered complex area with ride attractions, interactive areas, stores, and restaurants.
Ride Attraction: Mario Kart – Bowser’s Challenge
Ride Attraction: Yoshi’s Adventure
Restaurant: Kinopio (Toad) Cafe
Activity/Key Challenge: Aim! NOKONOKO (Koopa Troopa) POW Block Punch
Activity/Key Challenge: Stop! Pack’n Flower (Piranha Plant) Alarm Panic
Store: One-up Factory
In the area, wear a “power-up band” to earn coins and stars.
In the area, a wristwatch-shaped wristband called “Power Up Band” is available for purchase, which makes it possible to experience the world of the game as if you were in it. By connecting these wristbands to a special smartphone app, guests can record the coins they earn from the dozens of “HATENABLOCKS,” and also participate in a real-time ranking competition among guests to see how many coins they have earned.
There are a total of six different designs for the power-up bands: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Kinopio (Toad), and Yoshi.
Mario Kart and Yoshi’s Ride Attractions
The “Super Nintendo World” has a lot to offer. Bowser’s Castle, Peach’s Castle, Mount Beanpole, ? Block, the giant Piranha Plant, and other classic gimmicks from the games have been recreated, making the place feel like you’ve wandered into the world of the games.
Among them, the Mario Kart and Yoshi’s Ride attractions, which make full use of the latest technology, are a must-see. At “Mario Kart – Bowser’s Challenge” located in Bowser’s Castle, you can actually get into a Mario Kart and experience a race by taking the wheel. Mario, Luigi, and the rest of the gang slip past the guests as they drift and spin around the course. You can also enjoy a heated race using familiar tricks such as item boxes.
Also of note is the headset that replicates Mario’s hat, prepared just for “Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge”. Inside the castle, there is a space where many of the familiar icons and trophies from “Mario Kart” are displayed, so you can enjoy yourself while waiting.
In addition, a new attraction called the “Key Challenge” was introduced. In addition to the experience of punching ? Blocks and POW Blocks as Mario, there are also “Aim! POW Block Punch” and “Stop! Piranha Plant Alarm Panic”, you can enjoy fighting against various enemy characters.
If you collect a certain number of “keys”, you can challenge the “Boss Battle” where you can fight against enemy characters in cooperation with other guests.
“Meet & Greet” where you can meet and talk with Mario & Luigi
At the Meet & Greet, you can not only meet and take pictures with Mario and Luigi, but you can also enjoy talking with them. The conversations with Mario and Luigi are also linked to the power-up band, making the experience even more of a pleasant surprise.
