SAZAE, a sauna facility designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates, will open in early October 2022 at SANA MANE, a glamping-type resort facility on Naoshima Island in Kagawa Prefecture. It will open in early October 2022, and will be available only to guests.

Sanamane is a glamping facility on Naoshima Island, which is known for its mild climate, beautiful nature, and as a sacred place for contemporary art. The new sauna facility, “Sazae,” which opened in response to the popularity of the tent sauna, is characterized by a rounded shape reminiscent of a seashell, as its name suggests. Its beautiful form, with its soft curves, has a strong presence, yet blends naturally into the landscape of Naoshima in the Seto Inland Sea.
The interior space is like stepping into a shell.
The interior of “Sazae” is just like stepping into a shell. It is composed of walls gently spiraling toward the sky and a perforated ceiling. Normally, a hole in the ceiling of a sauna is avoided to keep the temperature from escaping, but this structure was realized by introducing an original air intake and exhaust system. The only lighting comes from the sky and indirect lighting underfoot, allowing visitors to enjoy the natural light that changes with the seasons and the time of day.
The seat has a curved structure that fits snugly to the body. The wood surface is smooth and comfortable to the touch, allowing you to sweat away without stress. The water bath located on the side of the building is spacious, with plenty of room to spare. You can lie down in a large position and soak while looking up at the sky.
