Mary’s Chocolate will release chocolates featuring “Tokugawa Ieyasu” for Valentine’s Day 2023, which will be available at department stores nationwide from January 2023.
2023 Valentine’s Day chocolate inspired by Tokugawa Ieyasu
For Valentine’s Day 2023, Merry Chocolate will present “TSUWAMONO”, a chocolate assortment based on the theme of “Warlords of the Warring States”. Focusing on Tokugawa Ieyasu, one of the many generals, the lineup includes three boxes: “TSUWAMONO”, which is based on the image of the Battle of Sekigahara; “TSUWAMONO ALL TOGAWA”, a collection of the Four Heavenly Kings; and “TSUWAMONO”, inspired by an anecdote about Tokugawa Ieyasu.

The “Commander” inspired by the Battle of Sekigahara
The “Commander” line, inspired by the Battle of Sekigahara, includes 23 chocolates with motifs of “Tokugawa Ieyasu” leading the Eastern Army, “Ishida Mitsunari” leading the Western Army, and “Kuroda Nagamasa,” “Otani Yoshitsugu,” and “Ukita Hideie” who were active in the two armies. For example, the pure white sake-flavored chocolates are based on the image of Masanori Fukushima, who was known as a great sake master. Kobayakawa Hideaki, the lord of Kameyama Castle, uses local sake from Kameoka City to create a gorgeous flavor. The green tea flavor was inspired by an anecdote about Otani Yoshitsugu, who is said to have developed a close relationship with Ishida Mitsunari at a tea ceremony.
The Four Heavenly Kings of the Tokugawa gathered in the “lineup of the great ones.”
The “lineup of the great ones” is based on the image of the thirteen military commanders who moved history, including Tokugawa Ieyasu and the Four Heavenly Kings of Tokugawa. ＜The chocolat with the image of “Ii Naomasa” is flavored with tamari soy sauce, based on an anecdote about a meeting with “Okubo Tadayo” in which he was told what it means to be a feudal lord. ＜The chocolates of Tadatsugu Sakai are flavored with persimmon, a reference to the city of Okazaki, where he was associated with.
Anecdotally inspired “The Indomitable One”
The “Unyielding One” is an assortment of chocolates inspired by places and anecdotes associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu. Eight chocolates are selected, including a black sesame flavor associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu, who was known as a “health geek.
