Gosho dolls made in collaboration with Koen Shimada Doll Studio, Kyoto

For the third installment of the series, the brand is collaborating again with Shimada Koen Ningyo Kobo in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, with whom it has collaborated every December on Gosho dolls for the Chinese zodiac and other good luck charms. This year’s exhibition will feature Gosho dolls made by this long-established company, which continues to create traditional dolls with the finest of Japanese beauty.

*1 Gosho dolls
This is a traditional Japanese doll based on the figure of a cute infant. The roots of the doll can be traced back to the Heian period (794-1185), when the doll was transformed from a life-size doll used to ward off epidemics into a “hitogata” (a doll that takes the place of a person who is afflicted by a calamity). It was then derived into the Gosho doll to pray for the safety of children.

Gosho dolls representing iconic sirens

For example, the “mermaid” is a Gosho doll that expresses the siren used in the Starbucks logo using traditional techniques. The colorful doll with a plump face is decorated with traditional Japanese patterns such as “snake eyes” and “water chestnuts” on its costume. Her feet, which look like a mermaid’s tail, are dressed in green hakama inspired by Starbucks.

White whales, beckoning cats, and rabbits are also motifs.

In addition, a total of 12 types including limited quantities are available, including “White Whale,” inspired by Herman Melville’s masterpiece novel “White Whale,” which is connected to the origin of the Starbucks name; “Manekineko Kin,” with its luxurious shine and presence of genuine gold leaf; and “Oriental Zodiac Earth Bell Set, Rabbit’s Request,” a black and white earth bell set featuring the motif of “Rabbit,” the zodiac sign for the year 2023.
